In 1944 the artist and writer Yorgos Makris wrote a text for blowing up of the Parthenon – an act in favour of a Greek youth culture that needed to differentiate itself from the Parthenon as the ideological emblem of nationalism, tourism and culture industry. At the The Structure of Revenge conference in Athens in 2016, Heike Schuppelius took up this manifesto and, with the support of the explosives technicians Konrad and Martin Fink, developed a visual model for the explosion. In the 3. Berliner Herbstsalon Schuppelius and Alina Schmuch present a scientific, environmental analysis of how the Parthenon could be taken down in an orderly fashion, in contrast to iconoclasts’ destruction of cultural monuments that flood the media.
