Sven Johne
Works
Sven Johne’s video work deals with the desire for regional de-integration. Particularly in eastern Germany, more and more people today no longer feel that they’re being represented by the federal government, that they’re not understood and have been thrown away. Retired civil engineer Peter Bittel, played by Gottfried Richter, addresses his concerns and wishes directly to the confidant of his choice: Vladimir Putin. Trying to remember the Russian he learned in school, he makes an effort to formulate the personal and political in a monologue of about ten minutes in length. It’s a text like a confession, which inevitably challenges us to question our own political convictions.
Sven Johne, born 1975 in Bergen (Rügen), is based in Berlin. His works have been shown in various international art spaces including Pinakothek der Moderne, München (2016), Museum für Moderne Kunst, Frankfurt (2012), MoCA, Taipei (2013), at the 5th Thessaloniki Biennale (2015) as well as the 2. Berliner Herbstsalon at Maxim Gorki Theater, BerliAltn (2015). Johne received the Kunstpreis der Akademie der Künste in 2016.
