Initially presented from 7 February to 3 April 2017 on the Neumarkt square in front of Dresden's Frauenkirche as a project from Kunsthaus Dresden, municipal gallery for contemporary art.

Manaf Halbouni’s Monument references a picture from Aleppo that shows a road block built by civilians to protect against snipers. Its installation on the Platz des 18. März at the Brandenburg Gate continues the discussion begun in Dresden. The square commemorates, among other things, the barricade battles fought in Berlin during the bourgoise-democratic March Revolution in 1848. After 1945, the square was, in its ruined form, a perpetual reminder of World War II – a reminder that disappeared when it was subsequently reconstructed and redesigned. With his Monument, Manaf Halbouni brings the presence of war and destruction back.

Manaf Halbouni, born 1984 in Damascus, lives and works in Dresden. International exhibitions including 56th Biennale di Venezia (2015) and the Victoria & Albert Museum, London (2015).
