Sinan’s film begins at the hills around the Black Sea. In the middle of a rural landscape dotted with modern-day apartment houses we spot a derelict building with walled and boarded up doors and windows. The interior discloses wall paintings and ornaments of a monastery. Photographs of Komitas, the founder of Armenian classical music, as well as a folk song that he sung give the viewers a sense of the place. Sinan’s installation traces the remnants of a lost culture that – even an entire century after the genocide of 1915 – has not ceased to trouble Turkish identity.
Marc Sinan, composer and guitarist, born 1976 in Munich. Lives and works in Berlin.
