The project relates to the historically burdened surroundings of the Maxim Gorki Theatre, specifi cally the Neue Wache, a neighbouring building that has been marked by divergent politics of memory, mourning and restitution. In Ronen’s piece a performer enacts a perpetual apology to passersby (mostly tourists coming from different parts of the globe) for accounted or presumed German guilt. The performance thus examines the burden of national guilt on individuals and poses questions about who is entitled to political apology and to what extent.

Yael Ronen, author and director, born in 1976 in Jerusalem. Lives and works in Berlin and Tel Aviv.
