For his project, the artist transformed the canteen floor in the building Normannenstraße 19 at the headquarter of the GDR Ministry for State Security in Berlin-Lichtenberg into a giant printing plate and inscribed his compositions deep into the linoleum floor. At the Berliner Herbstsalon Kilpper shows a selection of the resulting prints, depicting portraits of prominent figures from recent German history as well as iconic images of controversial events. The artist addresses topics such as state repression, surveillance and potential modes of resistance with his installation. It is accompanied by a video in which the camera follows a person wandering around the ghostly, deserted building – a subjective experience of relating to history.

Thomas Kilpper, artist, born in 1956 in Stuttgart. Lives and works in Berlin.
